GETAI
A getai is a live stage performance held throughout the year, but more so during the Seventh Month of the Chinese calender, when Zhong Yuan Jie is observed.
A temporary wooden stage is erected, either in an open space or field,
or within the confines of a temple or building.
Performers would wear loud and glittery clothing and perform to a live band.
A host leads the evening's proceedings,
peppering his or her commentary with crude jokes.
A ge tai is performed for both the spiritual and the physical, human world.
what is Zhong Yuan Jie
History has it that Zhong (middle) Yuan Jie started in the Tang dynasty (618 – 907)
as the middle part of the three related festive festive seasons during
which people offer prayers and food to the tian guan (the Heavenly God),
di guan (the Earthly God), and the shui guan (the Water God).
People prepare offerings at home or make group offerings of food
and joss paper to appease the "hungry ghosts" in the hope
that these unseen "good brethren" or "uncles" as they are called with esteem and fear,
will not bring them ill-fortune.
In Singapore, the festival has evolved over time into what it is today,
with auctions, rousing dinner and operas in the streets.
And in recent years the offerings have gone beyond the original objectives
of praying for one's own well-being and appeasing destitute ghosts.
